Webhosts for Tor Relays Who Are Not; OVH, Hetzner or Scaleway

On the 13th June 2020, I published an article to this blog that went though the reasons you should never use OVH, Hetzner or Scaleway for Tor Relays. A common response was that the article did not go into the alternative providers that a relay operator could instead of the networks mentioned above.

The reason alternatives where not listed in that article is that more time was required to research hosts that are both good value for more while also offering unmetered bandwidth. This article will list some alternatives I have found which should hopefully help anyone looking for a web host to run a Tor relay to make the right choice of which web host to go with.

HostVDS.com (Non-exits only) (VPS)

Locations: Moscow, Russia (M9. Plus Datacentre in MSK.IX)

ASN: 56971

Price: $0.79 per month [Pre-Topup required, $0.30 transaction cost]

Specifications: 50Mbits unmetered Bandwidth, 1GB RAM and 1 shared CPU core.

IONOS by 1&1 (Non-exit only, Limit your relay to 100Mbits in the Torrc configuration file) (VPS)

locations: United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and United States.

ASN: 8560

Price: £1.20 per month Inc VAT [Estimated, $1.50] (Price for UK based users on a 12 months contract, paid monthly).

Specifications: Up to 400Mbits unmetered (Limit it to 100Mbits in Torrc), 512MB RAM and 1 shared CPU core.

RPI Servers (Exits Allowed) (Dedicated server)

Locations: United States

ASN: 174

Price: $5 per month

Specifications: 1Gbit Port (confirmed, Relays and exits up to 100Mbits allowed, so limit your relay/exit to 100Mbits in your Torrc configuration), 4GB RAM and 4 dedicated CPU cores.

Notes: You are required to tell the web host before launching your exit node and to follow the "Tor (Anonymity Network)" section of the acceptable usage policy.

Between $5 to $10 per month (cheapest to most expensive)

G-Core Labs (Non-exit only) (VPS)

Locations: United States, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, Spain, Italy, France, Poland, Russia, and Ukraine.

Price: €4.95 per month [Estimated, $5.65] (Not all location are available at the same price but as of writing the ones listed should be available, but check before buying).

Specifications: (of locations listed as of 6th June 2020): 200Mbits unmetered, 1024MB RAM and 1 shared CPU core.

MivoCloud** (Non-exits only) (VPS)**

Locations: United States, Romania, Moldova and Russia.

Price: €5 per month [Estimated, $5.65]

Specifications: 100Mbits unmetered, 1GB RAM, 1 shared CPU core.

Trabia network (Exits Allowed) (VPS)

Locations: Moldova

Price: €5 per month [Estimated, $5.65]

Specifications: 100Mbits unmetered, 1GB RAM, 1 shared CPU core.

Notes: Please keep in mind the "exits allowed" is based on their being a number of exits listed on the ASN as I was unable to get in contact with Trabia.

ServerRICA (Non-exits only) (VPS)

Locations: United States

Price: $7.00 per month

Specifications: 100Mbits unmetered, 6GB RAM, 4 shared CPU cores.

Back Host (Non-exits only) (VPS)

Locations: United States

ASN: 174 (Normally but multiple ASNs are used).

Price: $8.99 per month

Specifications: 100Mbits unmetered, 1GB RAM, 1 dedicated CPU core.

Notes: Black Host is listed as non-exits only, due to them claiming that normal network abuse policy applies to all traffic. There are exit nodes that this network but your millage may vary.

Between $10 to $20 per month (cheapest to most expensive)

Wholesale Internet (Non-exits only) (Dedicated Server)

Locations: United States

ASN: 32097

Price: $10 per month

Specifications: 100Mbits unmetered, 2/4GB RAM (depends on server chosen) and 2 dedicated CPU cores.

Notes: Never contacted this webhost, so presumed to be non-exit only based on other Tor nodes listed on the network.

Ikoula (Non-exits only) (Dedicated Server)

Locations: France

ASN: 21409

Price: €14.99 (including €2.50 for a dedicated IPV4) [Estimated, $16.96] per month

Specifications: 1Gbps unmetered, 4GB RAM and 4 dedicated CPU cores.
