My trip to Potton Wood
Posted in: The Blog
Yesterday, they dropped me off, just outside the village of Gamlingay, to walk around Potton Wood. Walking from where dropped off (footpath next to Potton View Care Home) to the woods took around 10 minutes.
The image above gives you a view from the entrance of Potton, back to Gamlingay.
I headed towards the central area of Potton Wood. A journey made harder by slippery conditions as the clayey soil keeps water.
Though, On the way, the sun beaming though the trees (“God Rays”) combined with a slight haze, lead to some beautiful sights indeed.
Soon I was at the Central footpath, which was thankfully mostly frozen (things got far worse later on). I starting walking towards Cockayne Hatley.
I went straight past the chair that marks the point the woodlands break up into 4 different directions.
After reaching Cockayne Hatley, I spotted a bunch of cars at the church (later saw from a long distance away that it’s a walking group) and avoided “running” into them by changing route to a small “sub-route” that went around an edge of the woodlands. Past (overshooting) Potton Water Tower.
That route was awful, as the entire ground was mush. There was no no grip, meaning having to go insanely slowly to avoid tripping over.
Relief came when I finally reached the exit gate.
Exiting that gate revealed a lovely view of the surrounding countryside, towards Sandy Heath. I, however, didn’t have long to enjoy the views, as I had to make my way to a predetermined pick up location in Cockayne Hatley.
I headed left towards Potton Water Tower, then left again, down Hatley Road towards the pickup point to wait to be picked up.
Would have been a far nicer time in the summer as woodlands are not as fun when it’s been raining and is very cold and frosty.
